Phandar Valley (often written Phander) is the green upper stretch of the Ghizer valley in western Gilgit-Baltistan, running along the Ghizer River from below Phander village up towards Teru and Shandur Pass. The valley floor is at about 2,800 m, roughly 170–190 km and 5–7 hours west of Gilgit on the Gilgit–Shandur road. It’s known for its trout rivers, quiet Khowar-speaking villages and the turquoise Phander Lake. There’s no entry fee or permit for Pakistanis or for foreigners with a passport. A shared jeep from Gilgit costs about PKR 800–1,200 a seat, and a trout fishing day permit was reported at PKR 500–1,000. Visit from May to October.
This guide covers the wider valley: villages, trout, side trips and the road in. For boats, viewpoints and lakeside rooms, see the Phander Lake guide. Details were checked in October 2026.

Why visit Phandar Valley
Most of the Ghizer road runs through bare, rocky gorges. Phandar is where the valley opens out. Past Gupis the river slows and braids across a wide floor of fields, willows and poplar lines, with small villages on the terraces either side. The GB Tourism Department calls it “Little Kashmir”, and in early summer, with the fields green and the wildflowers out, you can see why.
It’s a farming valley first. Villagers mostly speak Khowar, invitations to tea are common, and the department notes that Ghizer itself takes its name from a village called Ghizer in the Phander area.
Villages and side trips
- Chashi: the village just below Phander. A side stream (nala) runs south from here and makes a good half-day walk.
- Phander: the main village and the best base, with the lake, the PTDC motel and most of the guesthouses. See the Phander Lake guide.
- Handrap: a village further up the valley at the mouth of the Handrap nala, known for good trout water. A trek of a day or two up the nala leads to Handrap Lake, at about 3,280 m. There are no facilities at the lake, so you need a tent and a local guide.
- Teru: the last sizeable village before Shandur, a little higher than Phander, with simple lodges. An easy day trip.
- Shandur Pass: the high plateau at about 3,700 m with the famous polo ground and lake. See the Shandur Pass guide.
Trout fishing in Phandar Valley
Trout are the reason many Pakistani anglers come here. Brown trout were brought to the Gilgit area from Europe by British officials in the early 20th century (published dates range from 1908 to 1916), and they spread through the Ghizer River system. Today the river, its side streams and Phander Lake all hold trout.
- Licence: trout fishing needs a licence from the GB Fisheries Department. A 2026 guide put a day permit from the local fisheries office at PKR 500–1,000. Guesthouses can usually help arrange one.
- Where: the river around Handrap and the channels below Phander are the best-known spots. Ask locally, because the good stretches change with the water level.
- When: roughly May to September. The season closes in autumn when the trout spawn.
- Eat it: fresh trout, fried or grilled, is the dish to order in Phander guesthouses.
How to reach Phandar Valley
- By road from Gilgit: take the Gilgit–Shandur road west via Gahkuch (where the road to Ishkoman branches off), Gupis and Khalti Lake. A 2026 guide describes it as paved to Phander and mostly paved to Teru. Beyond Teru it’s a rough track and you need a 4×4.
- Shared transport: shared jeeps and vans leave Gilgit in the morning, at about PKR 800–1,200 a seat to Phander in 2026. A seasonal NATCO Gilgit–Chitral bus also runs the valley; see NATCO and private bus access.
- Private jeep: about PKR 8,000–14,000 from Gilgit to Phander. Phander to Shandur by private jeep was reported at PKR 6,000–10,000; arrange it the evening before.
- From Chitral: cross Shandur in summer and come down through Teru. Compare routes in the road approaches guide.
Best time to visit
- May–June: green fields, blossom and wildflowers, with few visitors outside Shandur festival week (11–13 June in 2026).
- July–August: warm days, ripe apricots, cherries and mulberries, and the best fishing. Monsoon floods are the main risk.
- September–October: golden poplars and willows, clear air and empty roads, with cold nights. Shandur usually closes with the first heavy snow in October.
- Winter: most guesthouses close and the road beyond the valley is snowbound.

Where to stay
Phander village is the best base, with the PTDC motel, a lakeside resort and family guesthouses (see the Phander Lake guide). Teru has basic lodges closer to Shandur. Downstream, Gupis has a PTDC motel overlooking Khalti Lake, and Gahkuch has the most choice. You can often camp on village land if you ask first; follow the camping rules. Book early for Shandur festival week.
Safety and practical tips
- Road and floods: the Gilgit–Shandur road is prone to monsoon damage. In July 2026 a bridge at Yangal was swept away, and the NHA reopened the road on 24 July using a diversion. Check conditions in Gilgit before you leave.
- Cash, fuel and signal: bring cash from Gilgit, as there are no reliable ATMs in the valley, and fill up in Gilgit or Gahkuch. Mobile signal is weak; SCOM usually works best.
- Treks: take a local guide above the villages; see the trekking rules.
- Culture: dress modestly and always ask before photographing people, especially women. The general travel safety guidance also applies.
A three-day plan
Day 1: drive from Gilgit via Gupis and Khalti Lake. Day 2: sunrise at the lake, then fish towards Handrap or walk the Chashi nala. Day 3: drive to Teru and, if the pass is open, Shandur, then cross to Chitral or return to Gilgit. Add two days for Handrap Lake.
