Kargah Buddha and early Buddhism in Gilgit

Tourism Department materials describe Kargah Buddha (locally Yshani) as a rock-carved standing Buddha estimated to the 4th–7th century A.D., about 6 miles (9.7 km) outside Gilgit City, with nearby monastery and stupa remains. The department blog also notes Gilgit as a significant early Buddhist center from the 3rd to the 11th century.
