What makes Domail Rainbow Lake special
Few places in Gilgit-Baltistan feel as remote. After the bare, high country around the Burzil Pass, the road drops into Minimarg, where meadows full of wild flowers lie under pine-covered slopes. The lake sits in this green bowl. Its water shifts from turquoise to deep green and blue with the light and the season, which is usually given as the reason for the name. How to reach Domail Rainbow Lake

- Astore to Chillam: continue south through Gudai to Chillam Chowki, the check post where your documents are checked. Chillam is also the junction for Deosai.
- Chillam to Minimarg: cross the Burzil Pass, at about 4,100 m, and descend to Minimarg. The track is rough and unpaved, so you need a 4×4 and a driver who knows the route.
- Minimarg to the lake: a short drive on to Domel. Reports range from about half an hour to 45 minutes.
- Hiring a jeep: most people hire in Astore. Some hire at Chillam, which is reported at about PKR 15,000–20,000.
Permission and entry rules
Rules here change more than almost anywhere else in GB. In past years Pakistanis needed a no-objection certificate (NOC), arranged through the Assistant Commissioner in Astore and the army. Some 2025 reports say no separate permission is needed now, only an original CNIC at Chillam. Foreign visitors should expect to need clearance arranged well in advance through a licensed operator, and may be refused. Entry is usually allowed only in a morning window, and day visitors are expected to leave by late afternoon. Reported times vary, so ask in Astore the day before.

The Burzil Pass is usually only open from about late June until September or early October, depending on snow. July and August are the best months for flowers and green meadows. Where to stay
Most visitors stay in Astore and do the trip in a long day, or stay in simple guesthouses at Gudai or Chillam to cut the drive. In Minimarg, rooms and cottages are run by the army, and availability depends on their rules and bookings, so ask in Astore before you count on them. - Fuel and cash: fill up and withdraw cash in Astore. There’s nothing reliable beyond.
- Altitude: the Burzil Pass is above 4,000 m. Go slowly if you’re coming straight from Gilgit.
- Weather: fog, rain and early snow can close the pass. Build in a spare day.

A slow approach is better
Trying to do Domail as a quick return trip from Astore makes for a very long day in a vehicle. If you can, stay overnight near Minimarg or on the way, so you’re not racing the light on the return. That also gives you time at the lake when the light is softer, which brings out the colours the lake is named for.
Reading the colours
The rainbow name comes from bands of colour in the water. They show best in bright sunlight, when you can see the shallow and deep parts of the lake clearly. On grey days the colours are flatter, so if the morning is cloudy, wait for the sun to come out before leaving.

Because this is a sensitive area near the Line of Control, follow every instruction at the checkpoints, and don’t photograph military posts, vehicles or personnel.
