Domail Valley (also spelled Domel) is the high, forested valley around Minimarg in upper Astore, on the far side of the Burzil Pass and close to the Line of Control. Minimarg village sits at about 2,844 m on the Burzil Nala, roughly 36 km beyond the Chillam check post. Domel, with its meadows and the small Rainbow Lake, lies a few kilometres further on. You need a 4×4 from Astore, an original CNIC (or prior clearance for foreigners), and the summer season, usually late June to September or early October. It’s an army-controlled area, so self-camping isn’t normally allowed. You stay in army-run or paid camps and cottages, or in Gudai, Chillam or Astore.
This page covers the wider valley, the route and where you can stay overnight. For the lake itself, see the Domail Rainbow Lake guide. Details were checked in October 2026. The rules here change often, so confirm them in Astore before you go.

What makes Domail Valley different
Most of Astore is steep and open. Over the Burzil Pass the land changes. The road drops through bare high pasture into a valley of tall conifers, flower meadows and clear streams, more like the forests of Kashmir than the rest of Gilgit-Baltistan. That’s no accident. Before 1947, Minimarg belonged to the Gurez area of Kashmir, and the name is Kashmiri: menee (frog) and marg (meadow), so “meadow of frogs”.
For centuries this was the main caravan route between Srinagar and Gilgit, over the Burzil Pass and through Gurez. Traders, students and couriers used it, and in the early 20th century a mail hut stood on the crest of the pass. The route was closed after the First Kashmir War of 1947–48, and the villages south of the pass have been a sensitive border area ever since. That history is why the valley still feels so empty, and why the army controls who comes in.
How to reach Domail Valley
- Gilgit to Astore: about 3 hours. Leave the KKH for the Astore valley and drive up to Astore town, where you should fill up with fuel and draw cash.
- Astore to Chillam: continue south through Gudai to the Chillam check post, where your documents are checked and entries are logged. Chillam is also the junction for Deosai.
- Over the Burzil Pass: the unpaved track climbs to about 4,100 m and then drops to Minimarg. You need a 4×4. One 2026 guide says motorbikes under 150cc aren’t allowed.
- Minimarg to Domel: a short drive on through the forest. Guides give about 12 km, or 30–45 minutes.
- From Skardu: you can also come across Deosai to Chillam and then over the Burzil Pass. It’s a long day, so most people break it at Chillam or Astore.
Entry is usually allowed only in a morning window, and day visitors must leave by late afternoon. Reported times vary between sources, so ask in Astore the evening before. Older reports describe a written NOC from the Assistant Commissioner in Astore, stamped at the army mess. Some 2025 guides say only an original CNIC is needed now. Carry both your CNIC and photocopies, and don’t argue at the check post.
Things to do in the valley
- Minimarg meadows: in July and August the meadows are full of wild flowers. It’s the best time for photos.
- Rainbow and Crystal lakes: the Rainbow Lake is the main sight, and Crystal Lake is a 30–35 minute walk beyond it.
- Forest walks: short walks along the streams and through the pines around Domel, staying on the main paths.
- Horse riding: several guides mention horse rides in the meadows, arranged locally.
- Burzil Pass: the wide, grassy crest is beautiful in summer, but there’s an army post, so don’t photograph it.
Some guides also list trout fishing and walks towards Kamri, the village to the south. Others say fishing isn’t allowed, and the old route over Kamri to the Neelum valley is closed to civilians. Ask the army before you try either.
Camping and where to stay
Camping is the main question people have about this valley, and the honest answer is that you can’t just pitch a tent. Most 2025–2026 guides say self-camping, self-cooking, drones and weapons aren’t allowed. Overnight stays are in army-managed cottages and messes at Minimarg and Domel, or in paid camps set up at Domel and near Rainbow Lake. Availability depends on the army’s own bookings, and the mess is often full. Ask about rooms or camps at Chillam or in Astore before you cross the pass, and have a fallback.
- Gudai and Chillam: simple guesthouses, closer to the pass. The Brown Bear Hotel Deosai is listed at Chillam Chowki.
- Astore: the widest choice, about PKR 1,500–6,000 a night depending on standard.
- Rama: Rama Bayak and Restaurant and other stays above Astore, which pair well with a Rama Lake day.
Read the camping regulations before you go, and bring a warm sleeping bag even if your camp provides bedding. Nights are cold even in July.

Best time to visit
The Burzil Pass is usually open from about late June until September or early October, and the valley is cut off by snow for the rest of the year. July and August bring the flowers and the greenest meadows, and also the most rain. September is often clearer and quieter, but nights are near freezing and an early snowfall can close the pass without warning. See the best time to visit Gilgit-Baltistan.
Safety and practical tips
- Border zone: follow soldiers’ instructions, stay on the main track and don’t photograph posts. See photography restrictions.
- Daylight only: don’t drive the pass in the dark, and keep to the entry and exit times.
- Fuel, cash and signal: fill up and draw cash in Astore. After Gudai, mobile signal is weak; SCOM works best.
- Altitude and weather: the pass is above 4,000 m. Carry warm and waterproof layers, and allow a spare day.
- Wildlife: foxes and Himalayan brown bears live here. Keep food packed away. See the Himalayan brown bear.
- No litter: guides report fines or removal for leaving rubbish, so take everything out with you.
